Learn more about who gets Malignant Melanoma, the causes, common treatments and how long it takes to treat Malignant Melanoma.
Melanoma, a type of skin cancer, happens most commonly in people with lighter-toned skin, who are older, or who have spent a large amount of time in the sun. However, people of all ages, skin tones, and lifestyles can have melanoma. In addition, there's a genetic link, so if someone in your family has had melanoma, you may be more likely to get it as well.
The cells in your body that produce pigment are called melanocytes. When something happens that causes them to mutate, that can turn into melanoma. These cancerous growths are often caused by sunlight, though not all melanomas are. In the cases where melanoma develops as a result of something other than sun exposure, the cause isn't completely clear.
When melanoma is relatively small and hasn't spread, it's typically effective for the area to be removed surgically. This is a small outpatient procedure that can be done decently quickly in most cases. However, if the cancer has spread to surrounding lymph nodes, they may need to be surgically removed as well. Other treatment options include radiation, targeted therapy, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy.
The team at Elias Dermatology will help you create a treatment plan that addresses your specific needs. We're passionate about seeing you back to full health, enjoying life as much as possible.
When treating melanoma, the length of the treatment will depend on your cancer, whether it's spread, its severity, and your overall health. Treatment could be as simple as a small spot being removed from your skin. It may require more intensive intervention like chemotherapy, however.
