Actinic keratosis is a pre-cancerous growth that happens when there's severe sun damage to skin. While anyone with sun damage can have them, they're most common in people with lighter skin tones, light-colored eyes, and over 50 years of age. Other risk factors can include a weakened immune system or naturally red or blonde hair.
The growths that are the signature of actinic keratosis is caused by sun damage. Whether from being exposed to natural sunlight or having a history of tanning indoors, any and all UV damage to the skin contributes to risk of actinic keratosis.
When treating actinic keratosis, direct removal is one of the most common methods. This can be done by freezing off or cutting out the growth, taking with it any precancerous tissue. Other methods include using chemical peels to remove the top layers of skin, laser resurfacing therapy, or photodynamic therapy.
