Learn more about who gets keloids, the causes, common treatments and how long it takes to treat keloids.
Keloids are raised scars that spread, and can occur in people of all ages. They're most common in those under 30, pregnant women, people with darker skin tones, and teenagers undergoing hormonal changes and continue growing for months or years after they initially appear.
These pesky growths most often pop up as the result of a scar or injury. The wound or incision continues to expand even after healing has finished, leaving a raised, often textured scar. There is believed to be a genetic component, meaning those who get keloids may get them because of a predisposition or link.
Having keloids can be a blow to your self-confidence. At Elias Dermatology, we strongly believe in helping our patients achieve an appearance they can be proud of. We're happy to help treat your keloids so you can go back to feeling and looking incredible.
Sometimes keloids can be treated with at-home treatments like regular moisturization. While this can help in some situations, you'll probably need a doctor's help. That's where we come in!
Options for treatment include non-invasive options like silicone patches or injections where appropriate. For more intensive treatment, we're able to surgically remove your keloids. Other options are to freeze them off in a process called cryotherapy or use laser therapy to help reduce them.
Most non-invasive keloid treatments take at least 3 months to work, meaning a little patience is required to see improvement. In other cases like surgical removal, the effects will be immediate. Taking care of your treatment site is crucial, however, as there's a chance the surgical site could result in a keloid as well.
Elias Dermatology is thrilled to be your source of treatment for keloids. You don't have to live with them forever - we're here to help.
