Learn more about who gets seborrheic keratosis, the causes, common treatments and how long it takes to treat seborrheic keratosis.
Seborrheic keratosis are waxy growths that are seen most often in people above the age of 50. There may be a genetic factor in determining who gets seborrheic keratosis, so it's possible you may be more at risk if someone in your family has dealt with this condition.
While the cause of seborrheic keratosis isn't exactly known yet, there are a few factors that can contribute. Age seems to play the biggest role. As you get older, mostly above the age of 50, your risk of developing seborrheic keratosis increases. Genetics can contribute as well, so if someone in your family has or had it, you may be more at risk. Finally, there's some evidence that sun exposure can put you more at risk for developing seborrheic keratosis.
In the vast majority of cases, seborrheic keratosis is treated by removing the growth or growths. This can be done in a number of ways. Curettage is the use of a scoop-like instrument to remove the growth. Electrosurgery uses an electrical current to destroy the tissue of the growth. With cryosurgery, liquid nitrogen is applied to freeze off the growth.
